Communication in Zambia

Mission: Help George solve his communication issues

George and Peggy Ngamlana are missionaries with the Baptist Missions Society of South Africa. The are living in Zambia at the Fiwale Hill Mission. George has not been getting email for many months now and the BMD (Baptist Missions Department) were getting worried about his lack of communication to his support. It also turns out that he was paing a lot of money for a ‘land line’ that didn’t seem to be working. George is not really very technically minded and so the BMD decided to send me up to Zambia to help him sort things out.

This time, fortunately, I was able to fly to my destination. A much more enjoyable experience! On arrival I met with George and we travelled the 30Km’s from town to reach Fiwale Hill Mission. Communication is a whole new problem out there in the African bush. The only method of reliable communication is the cell phone. Unfortunately cell phones are also quite expensive. Add to this a situation where electricity can fail at any moment, and is pretty much guaranteed to fail at least once a day, and you can start to get a feel for the challenges. I was able to assess George’s needs and we are now in the process of solving his communication dilemma.

While up there I decided to help some of the other people staying at Fiwale Hill. So I set about fixing computers for the College, the Northern Baptist association of Zambia and the local clinic. I was also given the opportunity to speak to the students of the theological college at their Wednesday morning chapel meeting.
