Vital Volunteers

Posted by 3D-Outreach on 2 November 2007

Erica Blickens came from America in the beginning of October for a six-week period on a volunteer basis. Beginning in January 2008, she will be joining the 3D-Outreach team to assist with various team functions. We are excited about how God is building our team as He brings in new faces and continues to establish His work here. The following is her testimony.

“Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to him, ‘Go, I wish you well; keep warm and well fed,’ but does nothing about his physical needs, what good is it? In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead” (James 2:15-17, NIV). This verse has always captured my heart. I don’t know exactly when it was that I fell in love with serving God’s people (both those who know Him and those who do not yet), but somewhere along the way in my journey of life, it happened. My heart breaks for those who are trapped in spiritual, emotional, and physical poverty and despair and my greatest joy is seeing Jesus glorified in these – and all – life circumstances.

My first ever missions experience consisted of teaching Vacation Bible School 2800 km from home when I was 15 years old. Many of the children at that VBS had been taken from their parents by the government because of drugs or abuse and were starving for the love of God. I still think of those children and pray that God impacted their young lives through the VBS experience and the journey on which He’s taken them since that week, but I often wonder if what God did in my heart during that time was far more profound than what He did in theirs. From that time on, I couldn’t imagine devoting my life to anything other than sharing God’s heart with a hurting world.

Several years (and several mission trips) later, I felt God speak to me about giving my life to full-time missions. Every time I would read of Abraham, I would so identify with his call – it was as if the Lord were speaking the very same words to me: “leave your country, your people and your father’s household and go to the land I will show you” (Genesis 12:1, NIV). Over the years, God has blessed me with many great opportunities to serve Him, both overseas and in my home country of America, but only recently has He opened the doors for me to go on a more long-term basis.

I came to 3D-Outreach to volunteer my time for six weeks and during that time, God has stirred my heart to return in January 2008 to join the 3D-Outreach staff. I can clearly see how He has used my past experiences as well as my gifts to prepare me for this adventure. For me, 3D-Outreach is the perfect blend – a place where my heart for the nations can be melded with my desire to serve. But even more importantly, I believe it is where God has called me to invest my heart. I am excited to see what God will do in the coming days!
