Kids Haven Outreach

On Saturday 09 February, the Intern Team headed to Benoni, in the East Rand of Johannesburg, for an outreach at Kids’ Haven (www.kidshaven.org.za). Kids’ Haven, founded in 1992, provides shelter, support structure, counseling, and training for street children through a number of different means. The interns had the opportunity to learn about the vision and programs of the organisation, including the drop-in program, the bridging school, the nursery school, and the parent-training programs as well as take a tour of the dormitory and Kids’ Haven Village facilities.

While at Kids’ Haven, the interns ran a program for about 70 of the young people. After a few ice breaker games like “Do what I do” and “Lehlo says,” the interns led the youth in about 15 minutes of worship complete with dancing and hand motions. The young people were then split up into teams and given time to develop short skits which they performed on stage. The program concluded with a brief message about the Good Samaritan, highlighting the opportunities that we all have to serve God by doing good to those around us.

The interns prepared, developed, and ran the whole program at Kids’ Haven, and the 3D-Outreach staff is extremely proud of how they jumped right in and ministered to the young people, even if they were slightly out of their ‘comfort zone.’ They are definitely learning and growing in so many ways and it is a blessing to watch as they take what they have learned during training and pour it out in service to others.
