Careers and God.

Have you ever been asked the question “What do you want to do with the rest of your life?” or “What do you want to be one day?” If you haven’t yet, then I am sure you will be. How does one decide on what career path to follow, especially when most of us have to make this decision at the young age of about 17, before we really know much about ourselves or of the world we live in. So perhaps we choose based on what people tell us. Perhaps our choice is based on money, or ease, or what we think will make us most happy.

20160308_162148We recently had an opportunity to speak to young people facing these exact questions at a local school’s career day. There were over 40 different stalls at this event, and over 700 students from various schools attended. This was our first time being at an exhibition that was not by nature a Christian event. As such our experience was quite different and we found ourselves explaining what a ‘missionary’ and ‘missions’ is, as well as what it means to  ‘share the gospel’. We were intrigued that we often saw young people who started to show an interest in our display, but who were then quickly led away by their parents to displays that were showcasing other career and study options.

Our challenge to the young people that we did speak to was to think further than what the world is telling them, to what God is telling them.20160308_173544 To think how they can live lives of significance and have an eternal impact. After all we as Christians no longer belong to ourselves, we have been bought at a price by our Lord. 1 Corinthians 6: 19-20.

The young people who are a part of our Jump Team program have done just this. They have chosen a year of doing something deeper than just having fun experiences, and learning about themselves. They have opted to serve, to reach desperate people with the love of Christ, and in the process they are having incredible, fun experiences; learning about themselves and growing more into the person God wants them to be.

But maybe you are not young. I would still ask are you where God wants you to be, or are you just following that career path that you or someone else chose for you as a teenager?
What do you want to do with the rest of your life? No matter your age I would like to give you the following challenge. Ask God what he would have 20160308_173928you do with your life, and then dare to listen for His answer.
